Abstract

This study aims to explore the profile of digital text reading comprehension instruction among students at private universities in West Java, focusing on the instructional process, learning outcomes, and learning needs. The study is grounded in the issue of low digital reading comprehension skills, which remains a significant challenge amid the increasing demands of digital literacy in the information age. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing data collection techniques including observation, interviews, documentation, and reading comprehension tests. The research subjects consisted of students from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education program at several purposively selected private universities. The findings reveal that the instructional process for digital reading comprehension remains conventional and does not yet optimally incorporate digital literacy strategies. Test results indicate that students’ abilities in understanding digital texts—ranging from literal and inferential to critical and creative comprehension—are generally in the low to moderate category. Furthermore, students' needs include adaptive reading strategies suited to the nature of digital texts, digital literacy training, and contextual and interactive instructional models. These findings highlight the urgency of developing instructional models that integrate discovery-based learning approaches with constructively responsive strategies to address the challenges of reading in digital environments.
