Loan-Blend in Bahasa Gaul of Indonesian as The Manifestation of an English Acculturation

Abstract

This study aimed to shed a light on the types of loan-blend in bahasa gaul 'language of sociability', the process of acculturation and the reasons underlying this phenomenon. To underpin the study, the researcher drew upon the tenets of Haugen (1950), Weinreich (1968) and Koentjaraningrat (2015). In terms of the respondents, they were college students whose age around 19-25 years old and actively use social media. The primary data were obtained through questionnaire on google form, while the supplemantary data were gathered from google and social media. To analyze the data, the researcher employed Miles et al’s (2020) analytical framework comprising data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. In a nutshell, this study dismantles that the types of loan-blends found in bahasa gaul 'language of sociability' of Indonesian are 1) English affixes + Indonesian stems, 2) Indonesian affixes + English stems. Regarding the acculturation process, the researcher construes that the base line of acculturation occurs when English is used globally. In addition, social media also interplay to bestow English exposures towards the society. Overall, the use of hybrid compound words rises pros and cons among the society. The setting and participant factor, effectiveness factor, medium for learning and practicing English, medium for expressing creativity and negotiating identity, gaining social prestige are some reasons underlying why 99% of the respondents accept it. In contrast, 1% of the respondents disagrees because it deviates from the rules of Indonesian language.

Abstrak
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tipe-tipe pinjaman campuran di bahasa gaul Indonesia, proses akulturasinya, serta alasan-alasan yang mendasari fenomena ini. Untuk mendukung penelitian ini, peneliti menerapkan teori dari Haugen (1950), Weinreich (1968) dan Koentjaraningrat (2015). Terkait responden, mereka adalah mahasiswa yang berusia sekitar 19-25 tahun dan aktif menggunakan media sosial. Data primer diperoleh melalui kuesioner di google formulir, sementara data pendukung dikumpulkan melalui google dan media sosial. Untuk menganalisa data, peneliti menerapkan kerangka analisis Miles dkk. (2020) yang mencakup kondensasi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Secara ringkas, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tipe-tipe dari pinjaman campuran yang ditemukan di bahasa gaul Indonesia adalah 1) Afiks bahasa Inggris + akar bahasa Indonesia, 2) afiks bahasa Indonesia + akar bahasa Inggris. Mengenai proses akulturasi, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa titik dasar terjadinya akulturasi adalah ketika bahasa Inggris digunakan secara global. Terlebih, media sosial juga berperan untuk memberikan paparan bahasa Inggris kepada masyarakat. Secara keseluruhan, penggunaan pinjaman campuran menuai pro dan kontra diantara masyarakat. Faktor setting dan partisipan, efektivitas, sarana untuk belajar dan mempraktikkan bahasa Inggris, sarana untuk mengekspresikan kreativitas dan menegosiasikan identitas, sarana untuk mendapatkan prestise sosial adalah beberapa alasan yang mendasari mengapa 99% dari responden menerimanya. Di sisi lain, 1% dari responden tidak setuju karena hal itu menyimpang dari tata bahasa Indonesia.
