FROM MONSTROUS TO THE OMISSION OF WOMAN’S NARRATION IN INDONESIAN’S NOVEL BIDADARI-BIDADARI SURGA (Dari Monsterisasi menuju Nihilisasi Narasi Perempuan pada Novel Indonesia Bidadari-Bidadari Surga)
Abstract
Women are often narrated differently by male authors, as is the case with Laisa's character in Tere Liye's novel Bidadari-bidadari Surga (BBS). Laisa, who is the main character and plays a very significant part in this narrative, is described in a quite depressing manner in the narration; as a result, the presence of other characters obscures this character. Descriptive analysis with a gender perspective will be used to prove how the author conceals Laisa's existence and attempts to gradually remove her figure. This research also employs Braidotti and Tuchman’s theory to investigate how the process of monsterization and nihilation of Laisa develops. Liye's efforts to remove the character of Laisa from his novel will be aided, however, if he makes use of the symbolic annihilation theory in the process. At the end of the analysis, it can be revealed that the author discredits women in many ways, owing to a lack of domestic ideological stability.
