Abstract

This study explores historical metaphors and symbolism in the ritual utterance of Meagoliwu among the Koroni community in Southeast Sulawesi. The research problem focuses on how metaphors in these utterances represent the historical relations of the Koroni people with other ethnic groups and how they function to strengthen cultural identity and collectivity. Using a qualitative approach, the study applied referential and pragmatic equivalent methods to interpret symbolic meanings. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and oral documentation involving local informants. The findings reveal two central metaphors: the female metaphor in the story of Salabose, which symbolizes Koroni’s geographical, economic, and cultural appeal, and the shell metaphor, which represents maritime threats as well as the resilience of coastal society. Furthermore, the naming of the harbors Labuan Tobelo, Labuan Belanda, Labuan Wolio, and Labuan Bajo reflects historical maritime interactions across ethnic networks. These findings demonstrate that metaphors in Meagoliwu function not only as aesthetic narratives but also as ideological instruments that construct collective identity and historical legitimacy. This study highlights the importance of preserving oral traditions through systematic documentation and recommends comparative studies with other maritime traditions in the Indonesian archipelago.
